XT 600 3TB - some help needed

Hi guys !

Recently I have some top end noise "clicking" and I want to check the chain tensioner and tighten it manually a little bit. I think the spring in it is not working as it should.

How can I do this ? I just remove the bolt from it and push it with a screwdriver or something similar ? I'm asking because I don't want/need springs and parts to jump out when I remove the bolt

The chain is new and I've driven maybe 1500 km with it. I just want to make sure the chain tensioner (second hand) is tensioning the chain enough.

Thanks !

Well I guess it's just a stupid idea if I don't get any responses ... I was just too overcautious not do get any damage due to chain jumping or timing not being spot on. Most of the internals are new (few hundred kms) and I didn't want to ruin it.

The sound I get is nothing similar to that and I've checked them maybe 3000 km ago. The engine was split apart and re mounted.

I guess these engines are a bit noisy and the discreet clapping sound is the tappets/valves. I just believed tensioning the chain manually since the chain tensioner is not new it might need a little help.

I might open the clutch side again to replace the spring and ball for the non return oil passageway and check the nuts again.

The chain needs a certain amount of tension , more than that will cause wear to the guides and stretch the chain much faster possibly break it . With the auto tensioner these have there isn't a way to manually tension without the high possibility of putting too much tension on it. They have notches that prevent the shaft from going loose , pushing on the shaft to adjust it will likely click it into the next tighter notch . If the tensioner doesn't work buy a new one , it is somewhat common for those notches to wear out so the chain can slap it loose . Only a few bike models benefit from manual tensioners , the XT's not one of them.

If I was is your place, I would reset the valves first. Why did you change the tensioner in the first place? You can also simply check the spring in the tensioner by undoing the larger screw on it.

Just visual inspection i guess, maybe you can compare it with your old one. I personally dont think that the spring could be the problem. My bet is still on the valves, the screws on the tappets should be very tihgt, 14Nm according to the manual.

The old one is in the trash long time ago (it had a few nuts welded to make it longer ... chain was a wreck and so on).

The "new" one comes from a 1995 bike and it was in good condition when I bought it and looked at it the spring was in working condition and the teeth were looking good.
