The knock you mention could be a loose nut on the primary gear or loose clutch nut. This can get serious quickly as the Woodruff key can get worn and fail. Pull the clutch cover and verify all the Nuts on the shafts are tight and locked down.
You will most likely need a new clutch cover gasket and YES, OEM gaskets are best.
