lucky boy!

Hi guys
Not a problem as such, just wanted to share my relief at still having my bike this morning.

It was stolen last night by two youths. It looks like they lifted the rear wheel off the ground and wheeled it away from my house. They then smashed the disc lock off and wheeled it into a nearby avenue and cut the ignition wiring.
Luckily for me a sharp eared resident heard the starter motor going outside his house as the little darlings tried hotwire it. They made off and i got an early morning visit off the boys (and girls) in blue.

Note to self ....use the f***ing ground anchor and chain!.....always!!!

When I have parked any of my toys where theft is a possibility I try to use the three deterrents rule, aka make it so thieves need to overcome 3 seperate items to get away with it. Like disc lock , front brake lock, steering lock, 1,2 or even 3 seperate chains/cables through frame (so they would have to cut the frame). one is usually wrapped through a wheel and the drivechain also to prevent them from turning. Basically make it such a pain in the a** that they don't even try.

A hidden kill switch that cut any power to the ignition/starter relay so no hotwiring will work is also a helpfull addition.

Glad you at least got it back before they had time to do too much damage.

Yeah i feel really lucky jjrider. Aside from the knackered disc lock and cut wiring there is no other damage. The chain will always be used from now on to the frame like yourself. A new disc lock is on order too.

I like the idea of a kill switch too

Don't rely on a ground anchor with the chain passing only through the rear wheel. I recently bought a rear wheel from a KTM 500EXC that was locked in this way, the thieves simply removed the rear wheel spindle and took the rest of the bike, leaving the locked up wheel in place, which was the wheel I bought.

I always (when i bothered to use it anyway!) Fastened it to the frame. Every time i leave it at home now it will be secured this way. Refitted the alarm too. None of these methods will stop the determined thief i expect though. Cheers!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
