Killer dowel pin

Recently went to change my clutch on my 86’ XT600 and I found a dowel pin sitting at the bottom of the case. Where did this come from? I’m glad I found it before it would’ve wrecked my engine. I just don’t see how this came loose when I just removed the right side clutch cover to change the clutch. Anyone know where this goes?

It looks very much like the dowel that is usually captive in the crankcase side of the clutch cover joint and it locates the clutch cover in its correct position.

There’s 2 for the clutch cover. I have those on, they are a bit bigger than the one pictured. Is it bad if I don’t have this on?

Very odd? they almost look like the ones that go between the head & barrel or the head a cam cover, but i don`t see how they could end up down there? unless somebody screwed up doing an engine rebuild.

talk to previous owner, ask what work has been done.
could be top end related, if missing indeed not so good that its without as they take care of parts alignment, but you can only find out by disassembly....


measure and post the dimension, to me it looks like one for an M6 bolt, so could have been rocker cover related and it simply dropped down through the cam chain tunnel.


bad mechanic in any case!



yes, you are lucky it didnt jam the transmission or something. that why its good to have a magnetic sump plug, in theory it could hold any loose bits in a safe place.

only front one shown, but there should be two of them, front and rear holes

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
