I agree, sounds like valve clatter. Adjustment not hard, just fiddly. When you pull the "feeler gauge" thru the gap it should have some resistance. The trick is to be able to tighten the jam nut and not alter the clearance. I made a tool from a piece of brass tubing that fit over the square adjustment screw, wrapped the top of the brass tube with tape to make it easier to hold while tightening the jam nut. Recheck the clearance after tightening the jam nut and if not perfect do it again.
I just watch the rocker arm and when it is up I adjust that one.
