Alternative barrels

Hi

I've just descovered that the barrel on my 3AJ Tenere needs a rebore but has already been bored to max oversize for standard Yamaha oversized piston and I don't want to use Wiesco big bore etc, so are now looking for another barrel that hasn't been overbored.

Does anyone know if later XT600 barel will fit?

Jan has an original Yammie piston for 660 with 1 mm. oversize [so 101 mm.] for sale.

You may find Japanese PRO-X replacement barrel (to be pressed into the original cylinder froma machine-shop) cheaper than Yamaha ...

I think there is some misunderstanding here. The barrel is Sleeved, and so you just need to fit a new cylinder sleeve and you can bore to whatever recommended standard & oversize size you wish without changing the Barrel.

The funny thing is that Wiseco make a replacement sleeve too. I believe it is in the UK catelog at £58.01 (part YA814SL). I don't know the price or availability from Yamaha.

Does this make sense?

Also www.kedo.de do a fairly large 'standard'-type (i.e. not high comp) piston for the same price as a Yamaha genuine item. These go right up to 624cc so I would say you could get your barrel bored to suit.

If you don't sprechen ze deutch just call them up for a chat - they are very helpful. Or look under 'engine' section of their browsable online catalogue.

Thanks everyone for your replies

What I had in mind was getting a used barrel from a breakers, but I thought it likly that later XT600 parts would be more readily available.

However,the head and base gasket part numbers change after 1988 so I wondered if yamaha had changed the barrel to such an extent that it would be difficult to fit to my earlier engine.

I will go and look at the site suggested by Barry as this could be a good way around my problem, though I woulr rather use a standard Yamaha head gasket to keep obtaining spares on the road straight forward, should the need arise.

I will also price up getting a new liner fitted, but finding servicable parts in a breakers has got to be the cheapest option, if they fit.

There is a bit of information in an earlier post - see topic below: "help 34k barrel" - on compatability with earlier models. I think you should only consider those marked 3AJ, which is fitted to the later XT600s as well - but I am not an expert.

However, I do recommend you taken a look at the Wiseco site as this has listed all the pistons/gaskets/sleeves/etc.. available for both standard and uprated options.

If I were you and you are near the UK I would ring David Lambeth. Last time I was there he had over 25 barrels for XT's on his shelves ready for fitting. He'll advise you on what you need and post the parts you need.

I thought I saw David Lambeths contact details recently on this list, but they appear to have now disappeared and the number I have for him is now unobtainable !

I spoke to David yesterday using the number you provided, he was just on his way to Moroco but can help me.

He can obtain oversized pistons larger than the largest Yamaha ones and at standard compression (possibly the Wiesco ones, David didn't say) and so my original barrel & liner can be re-used. Not sure if the yamaha head gasket can be used without modification.

How if onlt I hadn't stupidly snapped off the front cam chain blade bottom locator from the crank case by allowing the cam chain to bunch up here, ARRRRRR !!!

PS: I'm in Bristol, England after a 2 year UK to Auz trip.

Glad to help. I've not dealt with David Lambeth but I've heard that he's held in high regard & knows what he's talking about.

When re-boring, there comes a point when you cannot use the standard head gasket as it will "intrude" in to the bore & will stick out. I could imagine it burning away at the edges. It may also affect the flame travel during combustion? Some of the aftermarket gaskets can be a little pricey but I don't see an option if that's what you need, unless you use a standard bore cylinder & Yamaha piston.

Is there a report on your trip anywhere?

We never got round to posting a trip report, but a very brief summery would be:
UK, France, Germany Italy, Greece, Turkey Iran, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Thailand, Laos,Thailand, Malasia, Australia, New Zealand, Auatralia, CRASH !

Left June 2000, 35000 miles, 18 months . Me on recently rebuilt 1988 Xt600z Tenere with girlfriend on "Tenere-ised" XT600E.

My engine now completely worn out !
