Hi Andy
If the teeth are worn on the 5th gear, which is very common on the early motors the dog teeth will normally be worn to. I have rebuilt quite a few of the 600 motors, but i have yet to need to replace the 4th gear and dog, but that dose not mean that you won't have to. While you have the box apart it may be worth checking drive sprocket end of the shaft, depending what year you have, if you have a snigle nut at the end of the shaft, some times the thread go's allowing the sprocket nut to come lose while the motor is running , ive had this a couple of times. You will then need to replace the shaft. If you have the sprocket with a locking plate and bolts its not a problem.
All so worth a check is the selecter arms these can ware badly, i once had a selecter arm break while at the wrong end of Morroco. Hope this helps, Have fun with it Skip
