If an accountant worked this out for you there would only be one conclusion: keep the XT600E, the cost of swapping bikes, higher insurance, building up a similar stock of spares, getting your luggage to fit etc. will take years to pay back at a few extra kilometers per litre of fuel.
A newer, lighter bike however is going to be nicer to ride in sand etc, the bit the accountants can't put a number on.
I'd go for the 400 as a bike very different to the R80, but I think you have to make this decision with your heart as much as your head.
