Buying a bike in europe
Hi, i am planing to do the silk road on a bike, starting from europe at may.
I hava a british nationality but live in israel, ineed tips where it is easy and cheap to buy the bike for the trip, and tips on what bike to buy.(we are two and looking to buy two bikes)

You're not giving enough information. If you're British you can buy easily bike in any EU country as far as I know.

Hi Daniel:

Welcome to the HUBB community.

There are two issues that you need to investigate, as follows:

1) Will the country in which you plan to purchase the motorcycle allow you to register it there, in your name, if you are not a resident?

2) Will you be able to get insurance for the motorcycle once you have registered it in a specific country, without being a resident of that country or (presumably) having a driver licence from that country?

The answers to the above questions will vary from country to country. For example, you might be able to buy, register, and plate a motorcycle in a country you are not resident in (provided you have an "address for service" in that country), but not be able to obtain insurance for the motorcycle because you have no driver licence in that country and/or driving record in that country.

Your question does not lend itself to an easy answer. I think you will have to investigate on a country by country basis.

Get the same model/year bikes ..makes fault finding easier if you can swap parts.
The smaller the bike the easier it is to pick up. And it should be cheaper too.

What country? UK will be easiest for you.

We are two, i have a british nationality and my friend has a dutch nationality, our main question is where we can buy bikes together and both register and insure the bikes, we have a driving licence but dont have a driving history in europe.

Are you planning to come back to Europe with the bikes?

Try Laurent Dozias at Ride in Tours in France. He does a sell and buy back scheme which will get you any bike you want, registered in your name and fully insured for Europe. He might be able to help you. He's fully legit and has been running his company for some years. He's also well known to HU.

One such country is Estonia. Foreigners, non-residents, even non-EU citizens, can buy and register vehicles in their names here, you just need a local to be in the papers as a "responsible user". You can get insurance in your name as well. You can see what's for sale here: mototehnika.ee - motorcycles and powersport vehicles

If you get an Estonian e-residency card, you can also easily sell the bike to another e-resident or Estonian national purely online, anywhere in the world. (It's not really a residence permit or anything, it's just something that lets you use government services online, and is available for anyone in the world.)

Another good option would be to go to Germany and buy a bike there, get export plates for it. They also come with 12 months of insurance (Germany/EU/greencard only of course, not worldwide).

But what if i dont know eny estonien resident?

Couple months later, OP and friend are the proud, fully legal owners of a couple of Estonian-plated bikes.
