Shipping Kolkata, India to Phuket, Thailand
Hi all,

Background: I'm currently in Nepal, and heading to India soon via bus. No bike yet. Hoping to buy a bike in India, possibly Enfield, but am aware of the issues of crossing Myanmar. I'm heading to Thailand to train Muay Thai for a couple months and would also love transport there, and if an Enfield, eventually ship home.

Question:
Has anyone heard of (or have information for) shipping a bike from Kolkata in India to Phuket in Thailand. Possibly via the Andoman/Nicobar Islands. I'm aware that both India and Thailand people visit the islands.

I tried trawling the web and HUBB for answers but couldn't find anything, esp with the internet speeds in Nepal.

Rossy, transportation of a bike out of Kolkotta is very difficult and expensive. Try Delhi. When I get back home after my ride on 9th Jan can give u a contact in Delhi who has done that last year. Give me shout when in India on Nine eight 2 five three 7 four five seven 3.

If you are buying a bike in India to have for personal transport in Phuket Thailand it seems to me like crossing the Sahara desert to look for sand.

From the reports here and other places it seems almost impossible to ship anything out of India and especially a motorbike.
A foreign plated bike in Thailand are only given a 30 days temporary import. This means you got to search out the nearest official Customs house and get your bike inspected and papers stamped every 30 days. And after six months you need to take it over a border and get a new temporary import. And Malaysia is out of the question cause its a Carnet country so you will need to ride quite far for that one... not impossible and not too much drama but still worth a consideration.
I dont think there is a lot of Enfield mechanics ore Enfield spare parts in Thailand.

If I where you I would rent or buy a bike in Thailand. Its dirt cheap, its readily available almost all kinds of bikes, 100-125 scooters semi or fully automatic, 2500 cm road and dirt bikes, Hondas new 500 series wtc etc. Parts and mechanics all over and cheap.

But its your choice of course...

I shipped out of Kolkata to NZ in 2013. It was hard, and took 3 weeks of cold calling random shipping offices to get anyone to take me seriously. It was like pulling teeth, but I did eventually get there.

I would recommend air freighting from KTM to BKK, loads of people have done it and loads on the hubb about the process..

It was Gati, but they subcontracted it out, I wouldn't recommend them, although I didn't have to pay any offical bribes.

They said there would be a clean warehouse to crate up the bike, and the crate would be approved timber, but it was a muddy street in the middle of monsoon, and mouldy timber.

I'll look up the details when I get home tonight and check the paperwork.

I used GATI

Shipping out of India to NZ (not including NZ port clearance fees) cost me £478.

Prices below in Indian rupees
Freight 3464
Packing charges 12000
Custom clearance agency 6500
Export entry/Dock processing 5500
AWB/MBL/HAWBL/HBL fee 750
Terminal Handling 2188
Transportation -exports 6500
Port net fees/wharfage 1961

Sub total: 38863.04
Total inc Ser Tax: 43238.36

Gati subcontracted out to a small back door freight company.

They told me they would provide a crate that was ispm certified, and fumigated. This wasn't the case.

They told me there would be a clean warehouse for me to crate the bike up in. It turned out to be a muddy street in the pouring rain. (Monsoon had stated that day).

One bonus was that despite the high prices, I didn't pay a single bribe, and I only had to visit the Gati office (air con, ummmmm) and not run around ports and do everything myself.

I was charged 2,35,000/-
From Delhi to Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan. Cheated very badly by Breeze Projects Pvt Ltd.

£120 for a crate is taking the pee! And most of the fees are higher than the UK fees I have paid before, but you win some, you loose some!
