Sure, $155 will not scar me for life, but considering it costs nothing to get the car into Georgia, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan or Kyrgyzstan, and only nominal payments for Moldova and Tajikistan, it is unusual for the region (and about 2 to 3 times what it costs to enter Azerbaijan) Only Turkmenistan is more expensive in the Former USSR.
Also, like Turkmenistan, the roads are generally bad.
But as I said, money well spent. Armenia is a very charming country with an incredible amount of stuff to see in such a small area, very nice people and a fascinating history. The chance to illicitly drive around and see Karabakh is definitely a privilege for self-drivers only. Plus, aside from the entry fees, Armenia is generally pretty cheap. No regrets for sure
