Iran - Irish Passport but UK Driving License
I am planning to go to Iran and will be travelling on an Irish passport. I currently have a UK driving license that will be topped up with an International Driving Permit (IDP). I know there are restrictions on UK citizens riding and driving in Iran - but are they worried about IDP+UK driving licenses with an Irish passport?

If it is an issue then I have a reasonable amount of time to get an Irish driving license.

No problem in my experience (EU passport with UK driving licence).

IDP is useful, but as it does not have a Farsi translation the average traffic cop won't be able to read any of your documents. Usually they are satisfied with just seeing your passport / visa and carnet are in order.

really, then you have some news.

because since 2 weeks Iran is definitely closed for motorbikes over 250cc and cars over 2500cc.
And all kind of luxury and American brands.


But maybe you have newer information when you say no problem at all ?

No Klausmong I was referring to conditions a while back - I am sure your information is more recent and relevant.

I was mainly addressing OPs apparent concerns re having a British driver's license.

We are talking about driving licences, not engine capacity.

Thats right, but does not help if you show up with a regular car or bike.

At leat at it s right now.

A thought has just occurred to me - were you travelling on a bike with Irish plates or UK plates? Am I right in thinking that Iran is one of those countries that give you fresh plates for travelling there (engine size aside). If they do do i have to give them back att he end of my time there or can I use them all the way home? The devil in me wants to ride home with Iranian plates as the speed cameras will freak out and not be able to trace me if I am a little too quick - no good for actual bobbies though.

UK plates, no local plates required (you are thinking of Egypt perhaps?).

All very straightforward then so long as you have a carnet de passage

I probably am thinking of Egyptian plates, am I allowed to keep them?

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
