Friendship highway

Hi. I am planning to ride this highway post monsoon 2019.
Does anyone have any up to date information.
I understand the road is open with a relocated border on the Chinese side but there isn’t much information on the condition of the road on the Nepalese side.
Has anyone ridden this road recently or intending to ride who would either post a reply or pm me. Thanks Mark

Hi Mark

In May last year I was up there and it was all still closed.

The road itself up to the border was excellent and sealed all the way up to the military checkpoint (about 20kms south of the border itself...we did some fast talking to get through and had to get special permission from some highup dude who let us ride to the border with an escort and then stay the night at Tatopani a few ks down from the bridge. We were the first tourist's they had seen up there since the quake so really lucked in).

After the checkpoint the road was pretty broken up. But really nothing different from the rest of Nepal. We were on road bikes and all very manageable. There were busy rebuilding it anyway so by now it should be all good.

I had heard that the border is open again....or will be very shortly.

Anyway go for it...you should be all good.

Cheers
John

No problem Mark. Found some of my photos of the area on the weekend.

The military were very explicit with us...no photos! When we asked why we were told...and I quote the head honcho who allowed us in..."because the Chinese are stupid!" (made me laugh anyway).

So I had to sneak some.

This attached one shows in the background what the road was like at the time....and like I say it should have all been fixed up by now anyway.

Enjoy...it's a truly beautiful part of the world.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
