Buying a bike in Iran / official procedures without carnet
I was in Iran for a couple of months last year and would love to return this year and explore with a bike.
I looked into buying a bike when I was there last. I remember Chinese-made CG125 clones being available in every town for about $500, and also some Chinese trailbikes for $1200, some more expensive Indian bikes, and some very expensive older model Japanese bikes.
I can't remember if I found out if it's possible for a foreigner to buy one and register it on his name, with a tourist visa. I suspect it might be tricky. **Does anyone have any information?**
The other option I have is to buy a bike here in the Ukraine, probably a Chinese trailbike, and try to enter the country with it (without a carnet). As far as I have read, there is some kind of arrangement possible. Is it possible for me to do the paperwork myself, on the border, dealing directly with the authorities, without a third party? I do speak fairly good Persian and would expect to spend a full day on the border. **Does anyone have any details?**
Thanks
David
