Salutations from Belgium [Trip through South America]

Hello everyone !

I finally registered after several days of non stop reading

I'm a 30yo man from Liège (who knows this city? Nobody does for sure) and I'm planning a trip to South America in January. I should be fired today so I'll have plenty of time

My initial plan was to fly in to Buenos Aires, buy a bike there and then tour around SA but after reading several threads here it looks more complicated than I thought

One really useful thread was one by Xfiltrate however it's a few years old already, has anything changed meanwhile ? Maybe someone could redirect me to a newer thread ? Basically it says that you can buy a bike in Argentina but you need one Argentine to be the co-owner of it and he/she must cross the border with you if you want to move around...

The bike I wanted to buy initially was the Kawasaki KLR650 but a few things I've read here made me a bit reluctant now, like the fact that 400cc and above a considered luxury products and therefore heavily taxed on imports… Also if these are considered luxury products would such a bike bring me under the spotlights ? I mean I don't want to bring too much attention on me or on the bike and be worried all the time that it might get stolen…

So then I thought why not buying a 250cc like everybody does. (or at least that's how it looks to me) but I'm afraid I'll get bored after a few kilometers, I had a Honda Varadero 125cc and man this was killing me on the highway and as you probably know Belgium is called "the flat land".

Also I came across this website: adventure motorcycle tours in Peru and all South America - Moto Purchase & Buy Back

Looks good and all but I'm not paying anything upfront, my trust towards human beings is nowhere near this level.

So to resume: I want a bike that won't make my look like a ****ing rich gringo but that would still bring me anywhere and mostly one that I would be able to cross borders with. Budget would be around 2000€ (I've seen one KLR650 at 4500€, I thought I could buy it and then sell it later for 2500€ for ex) I can land anywhere Chile, Columbia, Peru, Argentina… I'm all in, one way ticket

Cheers and have a nice day !

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
