an unusual anomaly.

I have noticed that the word "testing" is appearing after the first post in each thread on the forum. Presumably some sort of update was being done and is has been left over....

I think it's connected to the Amazon dot com adverts.

maybe I'm not seeing them because Firefox blocks them, but Opera, Edge and Chrome do not. Now to get the appropriate country ads working with GEOIP.

when you click on a link in the ad, where does it take you? SHOULD be to your country: .ca, .com, .co.uk or .de, or failing those to .com.
Thanks! Please be sure to buy your books starting from any book link on HU, we get a few pennies and it costs you nothing more. Thanks!

It does as you say. I'm in Bulgaria and I get .com

I clicked on a motorcycle cover. Why I would want to buy this physical item from Jeff Bezos' US outfit remains unclear. I'm in the EU, so an EU seller like .de would make a great deal more sense (cheaper shipping costs, no import taxes etc.), but what do I know.

I get .com, which is as it should be. It's hard to see why I'd turn to Amazon to purchase a "X-Pro 250 EFI Fuel Injection 250cc Endure [sic]Dirt Bike," but that's what I thought when Amazon was selling books out of Bezos' garage.

Grant, do you make money for clicks, or just sales?

Update: Just installed ad blockers on both my desktop PC and mobile device browsers. Nothing against HU's desire to increase revenues through links to vendors in the "wrong" continent, but I found one persistent advert for a vendor trading in "my" continent offensive. Now I don't see it anymore Result!

It's SUPPOSED TO BE relevant to contents of the page, but...

And we make money on sales only, not clicks. BUT if you click through and buy ANYTHING else we make money on that too, IF you hadn't already looked at it from a link somewhere else. In other words, the "first referrer" - that's us hopefully - makes the commission. So start any search on your amazon from here and it helps us.

thanks!

Who was the vendor? Nothing should be offensive!
Note that long ago I tried this sort of advert, and it was so far off "relevant" I stopped using it because it was very annoyingly bad. Hopefully it's got better over the years, which is why I'm trying it again. And it would be nice not to be in the hole every month.

Sent you an email.

As already written in reply #7, not much better if all EU users clicking an HU advert from non-German ip addresses, get sent to a .com = USA vendor. Possibly not a problem if it's a digital download, but a physical item... Not convinced regarding the relevance of the advertised offerings either.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
