Account Deletion

How does one go about deleting their account? Recent threads have led me to rethink my participation.

Same question for the mail list. I'm currently subscribed to one and can't remember how to remove myself from it.

Wow now that's a comment I never thought I would see here!
But at the same time if it's "not your thing" or you thought it was something else, it's very decent of you to notify the SYSOP most people would just not bother.

I'm very curious too!

Unless I'm missing something there hasn't been any real problem posts, or perhaps we have a different idea on problems?

Please point out problem posts, issues, and help us work it out. We are ALWAYS open to thoughts and ideas form anyone, and have worked hard for a very long time - 17 years now! to make this a great place to be. If we're missing something we want to know!

FWIW - there is no real way to "close" a bulletin board account if you have made posts, as deleting the account converts those posts to "guest" which isn't ideal.

So, either just ignore and don't return or contact me and I can remove all "personal" parts of the account.

To leave a Community mailing list, or join or change your email address etc, go to:
Horizons Unlimited Motorcycle Travellers E-zine Subscription Manager | Horizons Unlimited

hope that helps!

Thanks for the info. I didn't think about it causing problems, name getting cut out, etc. No need for that to happen. I'll send you a note this evening with more details.

The email community I was signed up for was pretty sparse so it shouldn't be much of a loss. I think I'm the only one responding there and there have only been a couple of messages since the fall.

Hi,

I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I cannot find a way to delete my account anywhere? Please advise.

Regards, Paul

Paul, you can’t delete your account yourself, I’m the only one that can. Send me an email via PM. Please note issue above re your posts being deleted causing issues. I can easily remove all personal information in your account and block mails to you and save posts and thus preserve lots of good information for others if that’s not the issue. Please let me know why you want to close the account so I can help you and potentially others in the future.

With just 15 posts it's not exactly difficult to just go back to those and delete them yourself. Remove all personal data on your profile, unsubscribe from any lists, no one knows you were ever here.

Where it gets tricky is where someone posts a question - it's then the first post in a thread - and deleting that post deletes all the good answers too!
If necessary absolutely I delete the lot, but have to do it thread by thread where they've started a thread, otherwise the database is full of orphan posts, which can cause issues.
I think this thread is useful as it tells people the details on deleting an account - if they read it all.

Mainly, contact me to delete an account, and let's work out why and if it really matters if their posts are left or not. I can do whatever is needed, just don't want to make a mess of things, and get it right.

Knowing why they want to close the account is important too - did we screw up, is there an issue with another user and they just want out or? Perhaps we can solve the issue to help the forum and other people in the future.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
