It takes me 10 minutes to get to work, in traffic!

Atlanta to Los Angeles, solo, 2200 miles, 32 hours of driving and another 6 for various catnaps and fuel/food stops.

Lisbon - Mainz non-stop in a Volkswagen Golf I Diesel, 54 HP, i.e. 24 hours doing 2.300 kms.

Many years ago I had a very brief conversation with somebody at a services in northern France. He was on a non stopper from the Algarve to either northern Germany or southern Denmark (I forget exactly) - riding a Mk1 Guzzi LeMans.

He didn't look quite right as he walked back to the bike

In 1989 I went from Runcorn to Naples via Dover /Calais non stop apart from 90 mins on the ferry , in a 110 V8 towing a trailer loaded with a 2.5m diameter satellite tracking dish for Russian ship having a refit . IIRC it was just over 2500kms.

Ok, two come to mind.
1: Geelong, Victoria to Rockhampton, Queensland, in 24 hrs. Google maps reckon 2064 klms, in a car.
2: San Vale Liberale ( Southern edge of the Dolomites ) to Garforth, just outside of Leeds UK, non stop in 24 hrs, 1800 odd Klms, on .................drum roll...........1978 Mk1 LeMans. Who said the most uncomfortable bike in the world is not a long distance tourer. The wife nearly fell out of bed laughing when she saw my matching bruises. Yep, one on each cheek. Both are keepers. The bike and the Missus.

Best on a bike is 975 K's in a day, Vienna to Kasel, there was a woman involved :-)
I think the train drivers in that area get to claim the record for the longest straight drive. From Wikipedia entry for Cook, south Australia.

"The former town was created in 1917 when the railway was built and is named after the sixth Prime Minister of Australia, Joseph Cook. The town depended on the Tea and Sugar Train for the delivery of supplies, and is on the longest stretch of straight railway in the world, at 478 kilometres (297 mi) which stretches from Ooldea to beyond Loongana. When the town was active, water was pumped from an underground Artesian aquifer but now, all water is carried in by train."

Longest on a bike was Mt Isa - Darwin (Near on 1,600k's) in 15hrs, have had a few 2,000k runs in 24hr runs in my landcruiser.

Portsmouth to Belarus in one hit, 20 hours and a long border crossing at Belarus. 1300 miles. Those autobahns sure let you press on a bit though!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
