For shipping questions check out our Tripplan/Transport pages at http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/tri...hipping.shtml. That should give you a good idea of costs to/from various locations.
Best bet for speed and safety will be South African Airways Cargo. A number of travellers have done the reverse route from S. Africa to S. America with them and reported good results. You can get contact details for various South American cities from their website: http://www.saa.co.za/800.html
Re the Russian ships, there's always a hope, but I suspect it's pretty unlikely - there aren't many, timing is tricky, and the ships I know of that head north at the end of the season do it as a full-on tour, and charge megabucks for it. Very unlikely to be cheap.

Shipping from South America to South Africa
Hi all
I know this thread is old, but at google top listed :-)
I’m disappointed about DakarMotos. It took every time about two weeks until I get an answer by email (I heard this also from many others). With DakarMotos it’s not possible to ship personal effects like camping gear. He offer me the highest price of all three (Bike and sidecar). For a bike only it’s a bit more than Motorcycle Shipping Company . They just put the bike onto a crate. It makes everything very easy but without ‘compact’ the bike (e.g. remove front wheel) the dimensions are bigger and so more expensive.
An other option is:
Wave Logostics, Montevideo, Uruguay
Contact person: Oliver, olivier@wave-logistics.com
Got very fast an answer, but not all of my questions are answered. You can ship personal effects as well. Price is a bit higher, but he took a bigger dimensions than I told him.
Feel free to contact me to get more information's

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
