Shipping home to Canada from either Santiago or Lima??
My wife had an accident, tore her ACL while riding Lagunas Route in South West Bolivia. We are now in Calama Chile for medical help and have determined we need to move toward getting her and bike shipped home.

Can anyone comment on whether Lima or Santiago are preferable to ship back to Canada? A complication is that we have two friends flying down to meet in Cusco in 10 days to ride together for couple weeks. So heading back to Santiago not ideal. We think now to get bike to Lima, meet friends in Cusco then ship home from Lima.

I know Air Canada Cargo flies into both cities but just wonder about other factors and cost. I have heard Lima is more difficult and expensive than other places in South America. Can anyone weigh in on this please?

Sorry to hear about the injury, that sucks! Just a thought - find a nice apartment to rent and recuperate "there"? South America, particularly Peru as opposed to Chile, can be cheap and easy, and you'll have lots of time to soak up the local culture.

I have researched the database and seem consistent that Lima is a PITA for shipping but doable. A great plan you suggest, only thing working against it is our insurance company said they pay for her return to BC for medical care so long as she seeks attention within first 48 hours of arrival. Originally we were planning to ship to south USA start June and ride home. I wonder if they would approve travel costs with a delay in returning home. In any case she was planning two weeks of Spanish classes in Cusco while friends and I ride a lap.

Definitely Santiago. Shipping from there is easy. Stay at the moto hostal, Casa Matte(?) can’t quite remember, but the shipper will pick your bike up there and it’s on its way. Very straightforward.

I 2nd Casa Matte, Christian knows everyone for shipping bikes and can be a great help. We shipped our bikes in using LAN Cargo, price from Toronto-Santiago (air freight) was $2000canadian. Should be much cheaper to ship them home on a boat from Valparaiso if you got a few weeks to spare

Know Christian well, been there couple times. Santiago a long way backwards. If i had to guess, wifes knee will feel better and we will continue north thru Peru. Likely ship from Bogota as Air Canada flies direct. A couple we met flew Bogota Vancouver w AC in Feb and cost for two motos was under 3k cdn all in, hard to beat that.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
