Selling motorcycle in Peru

Hi out there,

as my SA trip ends soon and transport to Germany is expensive, I'd like to sell my bike here in Peru.
As far as I heard it is only possible to sell it either to other foreign travellers or in a tax-free zone.

Otherwise my 90-days permit would not be cancelled, and some day I would find myself on the Interpol list...

On the other hand I find in the web (and had been explained by custom officers) that a Perunian guy cannot import the bike because it is older than 5 years.

But now I received some offers by Perunians who want to buy my bike. I wrote them, that I think that it is not possible, but they constantly tell me that it would work, everything would be legal and that they did it several times before.

Now I'm not sure, what to do... I do not want to find me at the airport, being told by an officer two hours before plane departure that they are sorry not to be able to let me leave the country w/o the bike.

Also I do not like the idea of being inscribed in the Interpol wanted list...

Or is it only the problem of the buyer? I make a contract a notary here (this is mandatory in Peru) and afterwards to to the customs, show them the contract and ask them to cancel the importation permit on my name?

Any advice, any experience?
Would be very happy!

Best regards from Cuzco

I think I'm on that list so you will have plenty of friends.

Guess one question might be whether you think you will ever want to go back to Peru.

We left our vehicle in Cusco (officially permitted by Aduana but the Immigration in Lima wouldn't have known that) and we had no problems at the international departures when our passports were stamped out. If we had abandoned the vehicle, then an outstanding TIP wouldn't have been an issue.

Obviously abandoning the vehicle or selling it to a local, while maybe not of any significance to yourself, could mean that eventually some countries get sick of it and start requiring carnets which would be a real blow, so hope you can sort out a legal way to do it.

Unless you can be absolutely certain that a particular procedure is 100% legal and approved by Aduana, if you go through the procedure and then go to aduana and ask them to cancel the TIP, you are giving them absolute proof that you have sold the vehicle to a local and then, if it were in fact illegal, I would think you DO stand a good chance of being denied boarding. Still, there is always the fact that Aduana aren't really involved when you fly out so even that may not matter.
