Russias insurance
Is it possable to get bike insurance at the Latvia/Russian border just for the trip through. Finding it expensive to get cover befor I go.

Still unable to get insurance for a trim to Russia and the Ukrain. Have tried the ones listed on the site but no luck. Was given a price by Alassi insurance but they have not replied to my last two Emails so try again. Has any one managed to get insurance or can recommend a company I can try..

As far as i know, it's compulsory to buy insurance at the russian border. I think it was relatively cheap, but i can't remember what it covered me for.

What insurance Ted? Comprehensive or third party damage. The Russians make you buy compulsory insurance at the border as Sean says. The best comprehensive insurance is a big lock and Avtostoyanka or inside the hotel.

try ingonord based in finland i used them 1 time before, but i think you will still need to buy when you cross into russia. i`m going to ukraine and russia in april so i have used these guys again.

Does anyone know how much it cost?
(3rd party fire theft at the entrance in Ukraine and Rusian Fed per month? week?)
Does anyone has any info on insurance further than that: Kazastan, uzbeck, kyrgyzs, tajick, pakistan Iran turkey and India?

and suggestions on travel insurance?

Hi Dodgy. I have only been able to get third party quotes,and thats what they sell at the boarder(so i'm told)When I asked about fire & theft in Russia I had to put the phone down from all the hysterical laughter. If you find any one that will do theft let me know..

Have been quoted £82 for 3weeks in Russia west of the Urals only.
And a green card for all of Europe exept Russia
£280 for 3months, both only third party. That is with Alassi Ins in Holland. Am waiting for a couple of other companies to mail me so will let you know.
Travel insurance no problems its just the bike that is the fly in the ointment. As its my only asset right now if it gets stolen then I am in big trouble as all my cash and savings are in it and the trip.

I wonder if that is cheaper than paying the insurance they make you buy at the border?
I'm not planing to stay for long in the Russian Federation but to cross Ukraine then to Ashtrakan and onto Kazastan.
Still, if anyone knows what are the charges at the border for insurance for Russia and Ukraina I would be very greatful.
(I have not called a single embassy for visas yet. Soon I will. Maybe they can tell. Maybe not!!)

See the www.waytorussia.net website. Buried in the transport section is information on getting insurance. Something like 'going to russia by car or moto'. Hunt about a bit. In lativa insurance can be bought at certain banks - read the information on teh website.

Purchasing 3rd party at the border will be cheaper than anything purchased in advance. Its all based on bhp and time period with discounts for longer periods. Not expensive. Don't have an accident as the claim process is a pain in the ass. The 'innocent' party gets to claim from the 'guilty' party's insurance company. Don't even start me on that - read my thread 'Russian Trip - Details' in North Asia Forum.

Hi, I crossed the Russian border mid 2005 and the insurance was 1250 roubles if I remember right. It was for 2 months even though I only had a 1 month visa. There was also tax to pay which was'nt much (can't remember) and a nice little sticker to put in the windscreen. At the Ukraine border nobody hassled me for anything other than reg papers.

Thanks for the information. After talking to a few people that have been this way before I have decided to just get insurance at the border and take a big chain with me.
Next thing is to find out about ferries from Odessa! Better start a search!

Finland/Russia in July 2005 cost 630 roubles (about £13) for two weeks insurance. This also covered me for Kaliningrad, but I did have to pay an "ecology" tax (480 roubles - £10) at the Lithuania/Kaliningrad border.

Travel tip: Don't overtake on the solid white line outside Police checkpoints - Doh!

Getting into Russia
I am traveling around the world with two buds. We will be entering Russia and the Ukranian border around early June. We are looking to purchase insurance at the border also. Do you know if they charge duties on the bikes or do you have to have a carnet paper? Also, do you know if a particualr border location is better than another? Thanks.
