I do not know the Australian rules specifically but it is normally a requirement that you apply from outside the Country for a working holidaymaker (WHM) visa. You often cannot apply for a WHM from within the Country issuing the visa. You probably cannot extend it if you have used it to enter that country.
Most commonwealth countries grant a TWO year long WHM visa as long as you are a British Citizen.
You generally can only work for half the time you are in the country eg 3 months if you are there six months.
You often can only get ONE WHM visa as well but Australia has a provision for second visa if you have done 3 months work in a seasonal harvest work.
PS make sure you do not have any dependant children as that excludes you from the scheme.
