Legal documents

When not travelling on a Carnet, what legal documents on the vehicle is required? Is any original owners document in any odd language good enough, or do you need a special custom/export document from country of origin?

I'm shipping a vehicle into Africa on a Carnet, but will be crossing borders without using it....

I've never carried any sort of export document as you describe. I don't even know if one exists. Countries don't care if your vehicle left home legally--they care about whether you're the owner and whether it's going to leave their country (or be imported legally, with attendant taxes paid).

Caveat: I may be missing something, either about your question or about some special situation which I've never encountered.

You're not exporting your vehicle. You have no (prior) intention of leaving it in another country. You are traveling with the implied intention to return to your original country. So no, no export documents. Just the same stuff you would need to carry while riding around in your own country - originals of ownership documents, tax, etc. - plus insurance for the country you're in.

Ok. So no extra proof of ownership. Got it.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
