Help in Carnet
Hello everyone,
I’m Calvin from Malaysia planning to ride motorcycle from France to Malaysia. I need advice or guide in regards to carnet.
I have bought a motorcycle Africa Twin RD03 model 1988 which is now in Nantes, France with my friends who are helping to get it road-worthy. The motorcycle is officially registered under my name in France. During my journey, the motorcycle is French registered motorcycle.
I’m planning to import this motorcycle to Malaysia for good once I reach Malaysia. I also have obtained import approval from Malaysian government.
Current issue are
a) Since I’m going to import the motorcycle to Malaysia, do I still need carnet?

b) Based on my understanding, if I obtained carnet, then the motorcycle need to return to France. In my case, this bike will in Malaysia for good.

c) Can I still ride bike by passing through other countries without carnet?

d) If carnet is MUST, then from which country I should obtain carnet from? Is it from Malaysia or France?

Ask your carnet issuer. In Europe that would probably be the German ADAC.

a) Probably, unless you ship it directly to Malaysia. The carnet is a guarantee to each country you enter that you will also leave that country with the bike.

b) I think if you just leave every country that required a carnet, and then return the paperwork to the issuer, you should get the deposit back. They just need to see that no country has a claim against the carnet any more.

c) No.

d) France, because you will be riding on French plates.

But yes, ask the issuer for details.

The question would have been better asked once, and better placed on 'Trip paperwork' "Covers all documentation, carnets, customs and country requirements, how to deal with insurance etc." - that would make it easier for others to find/see when they look for carnet things.

Calvin - I hope you don't take this too critically .. it is an organisational matter, you will get the hang of this website if you hang around and explore. There is a lot to see here .. don't forget the blue bar thingys at the top - they contain lots and lots of information that gets asked frequently. It will give you information you have not thought about asking yet.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
