Entering South Africa. Yes please!
I know that this has been asked 12 gazillion times but I still can't find a normal answer and I don't want to be a nuisance. Well then, I'll ask differently:
Has anyone entered South Africa with a non African (south) registered vehicle without a carnet? Has anyone actually done it or know of someone who did?
I am traveling NA to South America and I would like to ship my bike over to CapeTown and continue north in Africa. I don't have a Carnet.
Thanks a gazillion!

It can be done!!!
I recently crossed into South Africa without using my carnet with a UK registered bike from Namibia but this is via an overland route. If you are shipping it in, I'm not sure if the requirments are alot more intense!
Regarding entering overland we got through with little hassle. however did get asked at the border why we didn't have a carnet We pretended we got "Lesser Passer" or "Passavants" in previous countries. We actually obtained a document in Botswana that covers alot of the Southern Countries (Nambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe) - I can't remember what it's called but they should be able to give you one at the border if you don't have a carnet. It's alot more hassle without a Carnet but I travelled with a spanish guy that travelled all the way form Spain to South Africa via West Africa without one.
Let me know if you want anymore information
(we actually travelled from London to South Africa using a carnet but didn't use it getting into the Southern Countries)
Good luck
Amy

Amy,
One gazillion thanks go to you.
You're right about it not being the same as by boat but at least I definitely know now that it is not a must.
Good luck on your difficult journey back to "normal life" (you'll probably need a 20 cyl 10000hp vehicle for that purpose).

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
