Do the American authorities check proof of Insurance along with Title, Registration, license, etc.?

I have crossed into Mexico several times at several different borders and have NEVER been checked by the American authorities for anything. On the other hand the Mexican authorities will want the usual stuff: registration (not necessarily title) with you as legal owner, license, tourist permit, and the TVIP (should have credit card for this as it is the easiest). Notice that I didn't mention insurance. I have always had it but have NEVER been asked for it! Dunno!
