You mention you're going to North Africa. You should check with the RAC as to which countries require the Carnet, since you might not need it. Our information is that Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria do not require carnets, Egypt and Libya definitely do. So you might want to plan your itinerary around which countries don't require a carnet.

Carnets are definitely getting more expensive, but you do get the deposit back when you return with the bike. Perhaps you can persuade a relative or friend to loan you the money for the duration of your trip. My mum funded our carnet for our first trip!
