African visas at borders

Hi,

Due to the incredible slowness of Iranianvisa.com (despite paying them £200 for 4 'urgent' applications many weeks ago) I'm having to put together a back up plan for my original UK-Nepal trip via Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Jordan and Syria in case the Iranian visa doesn't come through before I leave in a months time.

Just wondered how many (if any) visas I would need to apply for before leaving if I drove from Egypt to Cape Town instead and how many I could pick up at borders on the way. As I'm sure you'll appreciate I'm beginning to run out of time now!

Many thanks,

Matt

The only visas you will need to get in advance are Sudan and Ethiopia. i would recommend getting both in Cairo.

Ethiopia is $20 and 24 hours.

Take your passport with the Ethiopian visa completed with a photocopy of the passport and visa within off to the Sudanese Embassy with two passport photos. Wait for about four hours and fill in a form and pay $100. Return 3pm the next day and you will have a Sudanese transit visa.

I've just done this in reverse (I got an Egyptian visa in Addis for $75) and my hotel is as we speak registering me in Khartoum Aliens Dept. which may be another $20, not sure yet. I met some people who did this process in Cairo a couple of weeks ago and it sounds exactly the same.

We paid £63 for a letter from the British embassy which we weren't asked for - if you were asked for it then we got ours in Addis in about 15 minutes.

A Transit visa is far easier to get than normal one and is valid for 14 days - I think you can extend it by 7 or 14 but not sure.

Every other visa is available on the border - on a British passport the average mode cost is $50. I listed all the visa and vehicle costs from 2009 on another thread.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for that, can sleep easier now knowing there's nothing more to add to my growing pre-departure mountain of paperwork!

I spoke to a couple today in Aswan that had heard of a guy getting a visa for Libya in Tunisia to transit (Libya) in 24 hours. This was within the last three weeks. Unsubstantiated but I'm going to try in Cairo next week.
