About to enter Indonesia with Carnet

Hello fellow travelers,

(German passport / German bike registration)

I made it with my bike (R1250 GSA) to Kuching, I'm a one day ride away from the border into Indonesia (and two days away from being on the road for two years ).

My plan is to do island hopping to Timur-Leste, turn around and do the southern island chain (Bali, Java, Sumatra, ...) and take a ferry from Sumatra to Western Malaysia.

Afaik I need to prepare the border crossing into Indonesia by telling their automotive association beforehand. I wrote them an email with the information I thought was enough and got a MS word file asking for more information. I sent this back together with a copy of the carnet, bike registration, pictures of the bike, itinerary, copy of passport, and eVisa.

I also asked whether I could keep the bike there for longer, because I plan to go to Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and the Philippines this summer. The only answer I got is that "I may enter Indonesia as long as my Carnet is valid". I asked again and got the same answer.

So now I've got questions left and don't dare to ask the lady a third time. To everyone who went through Indonesia:
1. The answer I got from her may relate to my question, may relate to the fact that I want to enter. If it's the former, am I still waiting for an official document that I need to show to the officers at the border in order to be able to enter?
2. "I may enter as long as my Carnet is valid" doesn't state whether I can stay as long as it's valid at a time. Does anybody know whether I could theoretically leave my bike until my Carnet expires? I'm wishing for that, but fear that's some 90 day limit from the date of entering.
3. Insurance: is it mandatory like in Malaysia, can I really get one at the border or does somebody have a contact so I can sort that out before crossing?

I'm planning on documenting my ferry rides, the Indonesian ferry companies websites are awful to use and always give me the feeling that the companies don't operate anymore.

Hoping for your help

Thank you in advance

I can't help you with your questions but good to hear that you made it to Kuching, Sarawak and going to enter Kalimantan, Indonesia.

I wish you well on your journey/adventure and hope the bike cover has been put to good use!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
