4 wheeler driving from Turkey to the UK (insurance questions)

Hello everyone my name is Nat
I hope i have put this post in the right place. Im very new to this having only driven in Europe with UK insured vehicles.

I have just brought a van in Turkey (registered in turkey) and wish to drive it back to the Uk where i live its currently in my girlfriends fathers name and will be transferring it to mine when my temporary resident application is complete. I then will insure it in my name and get Turkish insurance. I understand this is only valid in turkey?

My question is! How can i insure in the other countries i need to drive through in order to go home i plan to drive through Greece and then ferry to Italy and then France finally to the UK i have picked this route as at this time it will be easier than going the other way as less countries to travel through i believe.

Thankyou in advance to all that reply, and the nice people that have set up this forum.

Nat

Hello Nat:

The process is quite simple, assuming that you plan to route through Greece then take a ferry from Greece to Italy and then proceed onward to the UK.

You need to buy an insurance policy that covers you in those countries. Start off by making inquiries in Turkey, because I am sure that many Turks travel into Central and Western Europe each year with their Turkish-plated vehicles.

In the meantime, have a look at this (rather lengthy) discussion here on the HUBB, that will give you an overview of how things work: Here is where you get the cheap European green card insurance. The discussion is focused on motorcycles, but the concepts are the same for automobiles & vans.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
