Round Australia March / April 2021
Hi all,

I'm new to this page - planning a lap of Australia early next year (assuming all of the covid challenges are passed). Circa 6 week trip, combining some charity visits along the way for a cause that is close to my heart.

Happy for other riders (or even passengers?) to join. I have a wagon also coming to carry gear etc, make things easier day to day.

At this stage planning to leave Brisbane in March sometime and head clockwise around the country...

Anyone interested to join please feel free to comment or message me. Can explore possibilities from there.

You're not going to see much in six weeks, and what is the point? i have seen this kind of post many many times from people who have no concept of how big Australia actually is.

I have recommended previously something along the lines of Brisbane to Cairns as a taster.






Think of the fuel & maintenance costs, think of the remoteness when you break down, it could take weeks of your journey just getting recovered & repaired. Have a good look on Google at the distances between towns especially crossing the Nullabor or going up the west coast, thousands of miles of nothing.

Back in September 1996 (!) I flew to Sydney and rented a BMW F650, then spent about 4 weeks looping around the eastern half of Australia: up the coast to Townsville, through the red center with stops in Uluru and Kings Canyon, then back along the south east coast and Great Ocean Road to Sydney. It was just shy of 10,000 KM or 6000 miles in 27 days.

I thought it was a quick pace but not overwhelming. I'd ride a couple of 8-hour days, with a few short stops here and there, then stop for a full day to play tourist on the third day. Rinse and repeat.

What you're proposing is more than twice the distance in 6 weeks. You'll be riding a lot of long days without actually seeing a lot of what makes Aus 'Oz'.

Just saying. I would love to go back someday and do a full lap as you propose, but I think I would stretch it out over 10-12 weeks.

Yep, well aware of the distances. Will be my first lap on a bike, but 4th lap overall. Being Aussie born and bred Im not really interested in all the tourist hotspots - already seen them. Have other focusses along the way, plus the concept of completing "the lap" is a primary driver.

Thanks for your insights though - we may indeed adjust the klm per day if it starts getting too steep - but planning on around a 350klm per day average which I believe is manageable.

The distances won't be an issue at all. It is just what you might miss. Last year I rode from Melbourne to Broome in 8 days, and after a weeks holiday with one of my kids, rode back again the longer way through Perth. I averaged about 800 kms a day, but that was hard going.

My main concern would be heat, as it can still be hot in late March, early April around WA and the NT. If you start clockwise you should miss the worst of it.

With that timing in mind, watch out for road closures in the Kimberley during the "wet" ...

Well if you had bothered to fill out your profile it would have saved me time explaining to what i thought WAS a tourist, now i know you're an Aussie im even more surprised.

I`m in agreement with brclarke, id be allowing 3 months or else what is the point, you're not going to see Australia just miles of Tarmac, each to their own as they say.

I would like to be in Australia around that time. I have a little bike in Dunsborough with my daughter. i was thinking of going north and beyond Broome. I have been to Katherine but not Darwin. I have ridden in Australia before...Sydney , Melbourne, Katherine, Broome , Perth in about 2 weeks!! Crazy with Nick Sanders..and been back and crossed the jolly Nullabor amongst other things.

Hmm - took us 9 months (and 45,000 Km). We average 170 Km/day, however we spend time exploring everywhere. So we'd cover 7000 Km in 6 weeks. At 350 Km/day obviously you can cover 15,000 Km, which would not be a full "lap" since it would miss Tassie. Not a trip we'd be interested in, however if that's your goal, why not?

You'd have to stick to surfaced roads.

Go anti-clockwise - it's shorter...
