Overland Europe - China - Mongolia 2014
We are still hoping to find other vehicles to join with us for a trip through China in 2014, to share the cost of the obligatory guide.
Options are Kazakhstan/Kyrgyzstan > China > Mongolia or the reverse. We would also consider Mongolia > China > Tibet > Nepal > India > Pakistan > China > Kyrgyzstan. We are open to other suggestions.
We have a 4x4 camper and would be looking for others with similar vehicles to join us.
Timing is relatively flexible, we would hope to be entering China around June 2014 and spend a month or so there.

Andy,
Out of interest, what do the fees amount to for a month in China?
We have organised a route that excludes China specifically because of the costs and the rules requiring a guide to accompany you constantly. I didn't get an actual cost but concluded that paying for the guide and their accomodation and transportation for a few weeks would be prohibitive, along with any other fees that are required.
I would have liked to have crossed China from Mongolia to South East Asia but instead we are driving west through Europe and Russia and then coming back via Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

If you are still interested in crossing from Mongolia to SE Asia and want to share costs take a look at this thread.
We don't particularly want to travel to SE Asia, would rather loop through China from Mongolia to Kyrgyzstan or Kazakhstan or down to Nepal, but we have considered going to Laos and then back across to Lhasa and on to Nepal. All depends on costs and finding others to share with.
Ball park costs for the Chinese tour guide works out at around GBP100 per vehicle per day, plus expenses, based on a group of 3 vehicles and 6 people.

Thanks Andy. Interesting link with the costs explained.
We won't be changing our plans at this stage - we already have our route confirmed. Food for thought for a future trip though.

Mongolia - China- India
Heeello maay Frrriend,
we are looky looky for a possibility to cross china to india from Ulaan Bator/Mongolia. Is anybody out there who plans this trip, too?
Our idea is to plan the trip with a group of vehicles to save the fee for the guide etc. in china.
We plan this trip round about june/july 2014.
We ride both a BMW R 1200 GS
This is not a fix plan but we think about it.
Interested?

Hi Niklas, your dates and route are a good match for one of our options, the only thing that concerns me is how well bikes would travel with other vehicles.
We would prefer to travel with other campervans, 4x4s or motorhomes.

Hi Andy, My Partner and I are planning to leave Europe in August, head through Iran, Pakistan, India, Nepal, China and to Laos early in the new year. We would like to meet others travelling the same way to share China costs. We have a camper, does this sound like it might suit.
Regards Lisa

Hi Lisa, unfortunately our plans have had to change and we will not be visiting China this year.
It's looking like we will just do a circular tour, through the Baltic states into Russia, then down through the 'stans into Iran before returning via Turkey.
