Darien Gap? Container leaving Panama City for Cartegena 11/27/09

Hello all

I met a Mexican fella at the Costa Rica/Panama border who was planning on driving around South America. We got to chatting about how to do this, and I gave him a couple tips on freight shippers.

The quote I received from Girag was for $910 one way, just for the bike, which is obscene. I may be an eccentric world traveler, but I ain´t a rich eccentric world traveller, so was planning on heading back to the states.

Well, I just bumped into this fella in the lobby of my hotel here in Panama City, and he mentioned that he made arrangements to book a 40 ft. container, and asked if I was interested in joining to split the cost.

His vehicle will take up only half the container, max, so that leaves room for 4-6 bikes, with gear. So, if there´s anybody who wants to come with, please get in touch right away. The shipping company needs all the documentation by Tuesday (11/24/09).

For future reference, the shipping company is:

Johana M. Jaen
(507) 265-1190
China Shipping Agency, South America
ASR Tower, Floor 11
58 St., Samuel Lewis Ave.
POB 0832-2771, WTC
Panama, Republic of Panama
:: China Shipping Agency Central America ::

As of 11/21/09, prices from Panama City to Cartegena are:

$950 USD - 40 ft. Container
$850 USD - 20 ft. Container

The Mexican fella making the trip is named Francisco Martinez, here is his email:

If anybody wants to join up, please contact me first:

Hasta Luego

Sent you an email, but my internet is spotty at best. Am out next to the Tocumen) airport. Could commit tomorrow, but need to know about the rumored difficulties recently in Cartegena (¨confiscated¨ bikes, etc.).

Thanks much.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
