Around the med from Greece Dec2015-Jan 2016

Greetings fellow travellers,

Althought i have been a rider for some years now i have never had the chance to actual plan a long trip anywhere outside of Greece.

This winter (probably from the 15th of Dec 2015 to the 15th of January 2016) i was thinking of taking a trip around the Mediterrannean.

The Plan is to start from Greece (Thessaloniki) to Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Libya, Tunis and from there ferry to Italy and back to Greece through Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Macedonia.
I would very much like to visit Marocco and Spain but due to the fact that the border is closed between Marocco and Algeria i think that it is best to ferry from Tunis back to Europe instead.

This route was panned from information that i gather from other topics around HU. I am still not sure of the exact route but from what i understand i should avoid Israel due to the Boycott from the Arabian countries.

I ride a semimodified Transalp 650 and would love to hear everyones tips and advice on this route.

I am currently a one man show so anyone that would be willing to join me is more than welcome since solo riding is not recommended...

Thanks.

George

Hello George
to the hubb. There's lots of great information here.

Your plan has one or 2 flaws: Syria and Libya are war zones! Saudi Arabia is notoriously difficult to get a visa/enter with a motor vehicle. If you do make it to Jordan, then there's a ferry from Aqaba to Neiweba on Sinai, hence avoiding Israel. Egypt requires a Carnet de Passage for your vehicle.

I would check ferry connections in order to avoid the dangerous areas if I were you, as well as visa regulations for all countries on your itinerary.

Why not head for the HU Mini meet in Bulgaria on 3 to 5th July in Idilevo, about 1/2 way between Sofia and Varna https://www.facebook.com/events/827363600676797/ and Еvents | motosapiens.org

Also HU Montenegro in late June http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...ing-june-80521

There'll be lots of people to speak to there.

Hello Chris and thank you for the welcome!!

Hmm ok i see you point. Actually the ferry from Aquaba to Nuweiba would be perfect since i wanted to visit Petra anyway and that would be the perfect choice to cross.......but if not Syria then how can i get to Jordan from Turkey???

Is the situation in Syria and Libya that bad in general or is it a current status?

Maybe that route is too hot these days and i might be better off doing the "Greece - Marocco and back" route i wanted to plan for next year....what do you think?

As for the Bulgaria and Montenegro meets i would love to attend if i would find some time. I work in the hospitality industry so although we get enough free time during the winter, we are slaving at the summer months specially the weekends.

Do you read a quality newspaper/news website? Do you watch quality TV news programs?

With regard to your other questions: Please take a little time to use the search function on this site (top right), as well as browse the forums. I could do the searching for you, but where would the fun be in that?

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
