Seems like we are swapping countries then... It would be fun to see who had to go through the most amount of absolute &^%$#^& and paperwork to get this done!

I'd again urge all you guys to research rainy seasons a little. If you travel Africa south of the Equator in rainy seasons, you will pretty much be restricted to the main roads and miss all the good stuff.

And I'll mention the Carnet again: South African AA... Google is your friend

The west coast route is fine..I spent along time on me motorbike in the rain and all the route i went was fine alittle slippey but not to much heavey
logging truck's etc.

But the wet season in angola is a problem for 4x4 not so much bike's the roads were really bad there wasnt any in some area's just big corragation
full of water.

Anyone out there done the EAST COAST route recently this is a area of concern also...at times weather and sudan visa hurd it's exspensive ferry to sudan and silly diesel tax in syria jordan.

Good luck to us all I say...anyone after help let me now as i can place in the rite direction with our friends on the hubb etc...Regards Dan & Lou

I have passed the AA in Cape Town many times, they are located almost opposite the 'Good Hope Center' on Lower main Road, or Sir Lowry's Road, can't remember.

Any way for any one who does not know the AA in South Africa.

I have to disagree about the "robbing Egyptians"

Aus carnet for Egypt - 200%

SA carnet for Egypt - 200%

UK carnet for Egypt - 800%

I think you need to look closer to home for the thieving.

Arent you a lucky chap with your low carnet price for egypt...You can do your trip knowing that us wingeing Pom's have to pay a higher price at the moment...It can drop.

But all depends on the vehicle and its cost in the current secondhand market
Sellect the correct vehicle You brits.

Anyone after help on carnets good luck the people at the RAC will do everything to help...

I'm also a wingeing pom, just don't happen to live there at the moment.

The more I look into paperwork for my trip, the more bullsh*t bureaucracy I come up against, so just wanted to highlight who is doing the robbing.

And I may get a cheaper carnet here but I get screwed in other ways, like having to pay for compulsory third party insurance wich isn't worth the paper it's printed on outside Aus in order keep my registration current, even though my vehicle is sat in a container on it's way to Cape Town.

Me and mate are leaving oz next year around the same time as you but going north through Africa might be nice to stay in contact and hook up in our travels if they cross paths

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
