4 weeks in March 2016 - Morokko or Turkey/Georgia anyone?

Hi there,
I have four weeks of vacation from this year left to burn by end of March 2016, rain or shine. I live in the greater Frankfurt area in Germany and think about going either to Turkey and Georgia or to Morocco. I´m a bit more fond on Georgia, as I could not do that trip in much less time and I won´t have the chance of 4 weeks off anytime soon again. For a nice Morocco trip, two weeks would be sufficient and I can get two weeks off without a problem anytime.

I´m well aware that the middle and northern parts of Turkey are - at least usually - just above freezing temperatures, during the day possibly up to maybe 12 degrees celsius. Good enough for me; rather cold on the bike but warm in the office. In southern Turkey, spring will have arrived by then, thus going the southern route and then crossing Turkey to the north to get into Georgia and then going back through northern Turkey seems to be an option. Another option will be to go into Iran, but this does require much more thought as a carnet and a visum will be required. I´m fine doing the Turkey/Georgia tour just by myself; I do feel pretty comfy in Turkey and Georgia is said to be just fine.

Morocco is a different ballgame; I´m pretty sure I´ll feel uncomfortable all on my own there. Couldn´t put a finger on the reason; maybe it´s due to all those travel warnings for Morocco regarding terrorists. Thus, I´d prefer to find a buddy or even a bunch of guys I could travel Morocco with. Whatever it will be, I´m not interested in being a tour guide, a nanny or an entertainer; I did break my foot badly on an offroad trip in July, have spent all summer and fall working from home office, looking at the wallpaper and (I guess) generally being in the way, now I need just to get the hell out of Dodge on a quiet, long-distance ride, just for once without Missus riding shotgun with her Transalp and the kids riding pillion on our bikes. Daily average will probably be around 400 to 600km, I´d like to see some of the sights and to take time for some nice pics on black&white film, but other than that I´d really like to RIDE and enjoy the scenery, with lots of coffee in between. Oh - I´m not too keen on heavy offroading this time; the foot still friggin´ hurts and there´s some sort of brake in my brain thinking of sand roads, thus I can do right now without lifting 220kg KTM off my foot again and seven wires to be placed in the bones. Gravel roads won´t stop me, though.

Me, I´m 51, German male, riding a KTM 1190 Adventure R (the other option would be my old travel horse Honda Africa Twin). I´ve been across most European countries on the bike, from Polar Circle to Romania and Wales to Ukraine. I´m pretty basic when it comes to travelling; I´ll take a robust tent and sleeping bag and will otherwise sleep in anything from one-star B&B to a nice, cozy barn in the hay, with an occasional night in a nicer stay for a shower and a bed. I´m not a professional mechanic by any means but am able to change tires, repair flats and to fix most mechanical and electrical bugs on a bike, but certainly not electronic bugs.

I´ll be good to go on March 5 and will have to be back on April 3 at the very latest (I might want to be back a couple of days earlier, though). So, if anyone has similar plans, you´re welcome to check whether there´s some good ideas to share.

Cheers
Chris

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
