Final word on my VAT refund saga. I just received the message below from C&E. Seems they can't give a refund - has to come from the guy who wouldn't credit VAT in the first place. Oh well, I still got a good price, even with VAT. Cheers

Further to your Email dated 01 May 2002 which I am replying to on behalf of
our National Advice centre.
I can confirm that where goods are directly exported from the UK to a
customer in the US the supply of the goods may be zero rated providing that
the seller obtains the required proof of export documentation.
unfortunately Customs and Excise are unable to reimburse any amounts of VAT
charged incorrectly, if you feel that you have been charged incorrectly you
should contact the person who sold the goods to arrange reimbursement.
