Servicing a BMW bike outside Europe

Hi all,

I'm waiting for my bike from the UK to be serviced here in Alaska, and the guys told be that they won't be able to run the BMW Motorrad Diagnostic System as the software they have is for a different zone.

Now this is something I don't understand, these motorcycles are meant to be used for touring long distances, and that means that they need to be serviced in different places. Anyone had a similar experience? I can't believe that the bike can only be connected to the diagnostic system in Europe.

Cheers,
Leo

We've had our Canadian '06 R12GS and '12 F650GS serviced in several countries across three continents (N. and S. America and Europe) without a problem.

Don't see why a European BMW couldn't be serviced in N. America...

He's talking s**t....

Unless he's trying to use a non-genuine BMW diagnostic computer perhaps ??

I've plugged in bikes from all over the world to one's in the U.K.

It will work fine. The bike doesn't know where it is.

Which dealer are you taking it to ? I know the manager of one in Fairbanks.

Vehicles with a greater number of wheels have different settings for different markets. Engines, automated gearboxes, air conditioning etc. It never stops the diagnostics working so long as you say no when it asks about reprogramming something.

I think this dealer is clueless and frightened of the computer.

Agreed. It's b*ll*x. I've have an 05 R1200GS serviced in the US and in Canada without any bother. The Ontario dealer even attended to a manufacturer recall item and a warranty repair.

Should be no problems.
If nothing else, try to find someone with GS911, then at least error codes can be checked.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
