Hauling an MTB on a motorbike?
Hi guys,

After a year of traveling and a year of living like a beach bum, I've got a decent job. So again a decent cash flow.

However, it is a nightmare with PT and traffic jams. Comes in, a motorbike. I have not yet owned a bike and i'm looking round now. I have a feeling for a decent Transalp. Looks sturdy, comfy ride everyday to the office and lot of luggage hauling is easy.

This is the main issue. My main sport is mountainbiking, so i need to move my bike around ALL the time. I do not own a car and I can't afford both a bike and a car. A bike will give me an easy and fun ride to the office... but where to stow the MTB?

Which looks very creative, but it looks... rather weird.

So, in short.
- any experiences with this?
- are these bike racks off the shelf of do I need to weld it myself?
- How is driving a motor in this setup?

I do not need to go very far with it.. about a 60 ~75 minute drive max (with highway parts!). If needed because of speed issues, í'm willing to drive secondary roads, it is not that far but will of course take longer .


Love to hear any thoughts on this.

I have seen it in person, spotted someone with an MTB attached to their bike this summer. It looks bloody crazy, for sure, but a nice light bike weighs less than one of my panniers, fully loaded and probably causes less wind resistance.

That said, if I was doing it I would consider something like the bike trailers you get - rather than holding it off the ground. Front wheel off, into a fixed mount on the back of the moto, rear wheel on the ground, tow it. It's got wheels, use them!

I have taken my brompton folding bike on the back of my motorcycle when bringing my motorcycle to the dealer for maintenance.

The brompton off course folds fairly small.

It did work, in a functional sort of way. Not something I would do for 100's of km. With a full size bike I guess it's gonna be worse because the weight is further away from your center of gravity.

I like the idea of the trailer, but I'm not sure you want your bike to roll along. I think it will start bouncing and spoil your ride.

Also think about being hot and sweaty and dirty after mountainbiking, and having to get in your riding suit. Personally I would not be looking forward to that. You might end up mountain biking less because of the hassle.

If you care even 0.0000000001% about 'street cred' then you will not attempt any of these ridiculous methods. Carrying a bike on a bike.......it doesn't really work no matter how you try to do it. Good luck, it may be possible but it's gonna look ridiculous

I don't give a thing for street cred, I do what makes me happy.

Aside from that, guess the quick conclusion is it can't be done. Therefore I'll start searching for an amazing looking and smart girl that has a big car I can lend.
