Plenty of recent info on the HU Sahara forum or look here:

Everyone goes there, but for a first trip Morocco may be a better intro. Down south there's a lot more short range to do than most realise - no need for giant tanks or even camping gear. Got a new book out for there next month.
The big problem with Alg is you need an escort in a car which costs €100/day or so, let alone the ferries. In a 4x4 its not so bad but riding a bike it kind of spoils the fun unless you make it work for you by getting them to carry your bags and even cook for you. The riding is of course brilliant, see the clip below.

ok, cool, good to know that you go there regularly. We will be looking at getting a group together (mixed cars/bikes probably) to cover the cost of the guides. I enjoyed the company of guides very much on a number of trips. (Cambodia dancingroads, Spain Torotrail) especially if you are short on time, they will usually be able to get you to the really cool places straight away.
As far as Morocco goes: I know it must be nice, but it's a pretty long drive down from Amsterdam to the south of Morocco. I would prefer to ride 1200 k, take a Ferry in Genoa and then ride on African soil most of the way.
It is to be more of an adventure trip than a hardcore offroading trip.
And (this will come back to haunt me) we like to go a bit more off the beaten track..
Anyway, this looks to be heading off topic rapidly.
