Is Tunisia still safe?
Hey guys,

after riding to Morocco last year, me and my friends are planning a trip to Tunisia.
Especially to those areas/cities:
Douz, Ksar Ghilane, Es Sabria, Matmata, Metameur, Tozeur, Mountain oasis (Chebika, Tamerza and Mides) and Tableau of Jughurta.

My question is: is it still safe to go there? the austrian foreign ministry suggests not to go to Tunisia, if you don't have to lol
The thing is, it's the same with Morocco and i did not feel unsafe at any time during my trip.

And has anyone got more tips on where to go? especially for offroadriding or scenic road? GPS-tracks are welcome!

If your government declares a country to be unsafe for non-essential travel would your travel insurance company still cover you for a holiday there?

yeah they do. in every country in northern africa except Lybia and Algeria i think.

EDIT: i just looked it up - every country in northern africa

To my knowledge they have nly had the one event,. Their security has been beefed up and I suspect you will be fine. Travel on two wheels in general has far more inherent risks over the terror nonsense.
Course I am sitting safe and sound as I type this

This did.come up though, people panicking and not going are what enables terrorists. Tunisia warns of plot to attack capital with car bombs

After the events this year you cannot compare Morocco with Tunisia (yet).
Morocco did not have an Arab Spring so the old order prevails. Security wise they're much more on it than the new Tunisian government.
Then you add the fact that Tn is adjacent to Libya - not a safe place - plus I bet there are 10 x more tourists in Mk than Tn. You're less inconspicuous in Tn.

So, less safe than Mk but as always, much more chance of you crashing your bike or having a great time than having an encounter with terrorists, IMO.

I actually think Tn is a bit dull compared to Mk, but from Austria less of a schlep than Mk I suppose.

The problem with Tunisia from the viewpoint of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office is that the British officials have no great confidence in the ability of the Tunisian authorities. Morocco has a strong government and a powerful force comprising Surete, Gendarmerie Royal, Force Auxiliaries and army. So I continue to describe Morocco as 'Safe, exciting and inexpensive' which is the sub-title of the talks on Morocco I've given over the last eight or nine years.

With few tourists in Tunisia you will stick out like a sore thumb, and all it needs is a guy with a mobile to phone his friends 50km down the road to let them know you are coming.

You've only scratched the surface of Morocco, there's enough to keep you occupied for a couple of decades yet!

Morocco / Tunisia
Hi - I was on a ferry en route to Morocco when the Tunisia shootings occurred. The UK foreign office immediately put out a warning against travelling to Muslim countries in the Med during Ramadan for fear of more attacks. Found Morocco incredibly safe and over policed - trios of armed, super friendly police on the streets. It takes you back when someone points their rifle at your bike, indicating "nice BMW". Personally I would avoid terrorist hot spots like Sydney and the Circle line in London - happy to leave my helmet by the bike at a service stop in Morocco, I wouldnt do that in Newport Pagnall

Yes, Tunisia and Morocco are SO much safer than the Circle Line and Sydney.
