floodings
Chris,
Don't worry about the bad news from Africa (except maybe when its a nuclear bom) because as you will find out soon, thats the only news from Africa. Bad news sells, especially from Africa!! I would be surprised if you will see any floodings. To give you an example; Last year August we were negotiating the Turkana route from Kenia in to Ethiopia when i got my very worried dad on the satphone. The entire Omo valley was flooded and hundreds of casualties!! And that was exactly where we were going!!! We couldn't go back (fuel) so we pushed on and as we got to the border police station they confirmed the floodings but they also said that there were no real problems and we could get to where we were heading. We saw some signs of water (deep ruts but all dry) but in the end there was nothing stopping us.
It comes down to; keep your eyes and ears open and talk to the locals. The locals will be able to tell you where you can and can't go! African flooding usually involve flash floods but they run off quickly and most of the time after a couple of days the water is back to normal levels. Helas the people are usually not !
