Border crossing from Iran to Turkmenistan safe?

Next year we will cross the border from Iran to Turkmenistan when we are traveling around the world. We talked to motorcyclists who crossed the border before, and they told us that the border very close to Afghanistan can be dangerous. There is a danger of being kidnapped in trade for drugs or ransom.

Is there anyone who can tell us more about the safety of this border? Is it safe to cross or is it better to take another border crossing from Iran to Turkmenistan? We would also like to know the road condition, as we will be traveling with our own build electric motorbike. On the picture you can see the border that I mentioned.

The kidnapping threat, if there is one, is several hundred kilometres to the south.

Sarakhs is far from here and is absolutely safe in this respect, you have nothing to worry about.

I've been right up the Afghan (and Pakistani) borders in Iran, it's only really in the Province of Sistan-Baluchestan where there may be a problem, and you are really far from there.

The Afghan border region is actually very beautiful and interesting in places:

Pakistan, China, Kyrgisthan, Tajikistan into Iran

Hi guys,

I'm planing to ride my bike into Pakistan from India next year. But because the border into Iran is closed I have to take the guided tour thru China and then enter Iran from the north. Is there any problems getting visas on the border in this 3 country's? I'm riding all the way from Australia on a gemran Passport!

Thanks, Mario

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
