CHF 40 (about USD $45), you can buy them at any gas station and most certainly at any entry point to the country. You won't have trouble finding a place to buy one, I assure you.

Be aware that the police do set up spot checks for vignettes on motorcycles during the start of the riding season (May & June). The spot checks are usually at EXITS from the motorways.

Hello

If you enter by motorway (green roadsign), there is a lane for "no vignette" vehicules, there you can buy one, I quess 24/7.
If you enter on any other road (white, blue roadsign), there are only few custom checkpoints where you can buy it, only major entrys have checkpoints anymore.
But gas stations are open usually 6-22h and have them.

So, unless you enter on a small road and just hit the motorway (green roadsign) in the middle of the night, no problem to buy one.

The fee for not having one is sFr. 200.- + 40.- for the vignette.

Edit:
"Crossing switzerland"
Depends from where to where you are crossing switzerland, you can take a nice route without motorways or you go mad trying to avoid them.

Agreed.

If you have a GPS that offers a "no toll roads" option, you can use that to route through CH without using motorways. But unless you plan to cross only a very small part of the country (e.g. only ride through canton Geneva, or a tiny bit of canton Graubünden), it's best if you buy a vignette.

Otherwise, you will spend an awful lot of time riding through city centers.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
