It's not a stupid question at all. The fact is, you can ride almost anywhere with anything. It comes down to how much you are willing to suffer! Up until Panama, at least, the SV 650 is a fantastic choice. After that, you may experience some trying moments during the odd water crossing, and the suspension may bottom out occasionally (depending on your route). No big deal.
I'd recommend a simpler machine with more clearance and tougher suspension, but if you want to ride the SV, then go for it. It's got a reliable power plant and it's comfy. Chose slightly more "mainstream" roads and have fun!
Ride, man, ride!
