Uk to Arctic Rally July 2017
To anyone interested we are organising a rally of sorts from the UK up through Norway and into the Arctic Circle (and back) July of next year.

We have taken part in previous rallies; and have realised that paying hundreds of pounds simply to simply drive a route is a little excessive, and with no alternative found we decided we’d have a go at organising our own.

We charge nothing as we will be making the journey ourselves and simply think it will be more enjoyable with a good number of people; please have a look at our website and if you, or someone you know might be interested that would be great.

Any cars or motorcycles are welcome; regardless of engine size or age.

With no entry fee, no visas, wild camping being legal in much of Norway and the scenery and roads Norway has to offer, combined with the prospect of travelling with likeminded fools on and in a variety of ill-advised vehicles; we’re confident other’s must find this appealing too!


We will be setting off from a campsite near Amsterdam (seemed a nice central location rather than setting off from either the north or south of the UK) on July 15th and expect the round trip to take around 3 weeks!

Nice idea and if everyone's going on microbikes rather than the usual uber panzers it could be an interesting few weeks.

Not quite sure what to make of your disclaimer though:
"The possibility of serious injury or death is very possible."

If that was a realistic concern I probably wouldn't have done something akin to the first half of the route back in early June with my wife and her 80yr old parents. Sure, it's a reasonable distance and it gets a bit remote but what sort of hazards are you expecting?

I'm interested enough to put it on my list of possibilities for next year (as one of the easier ones!) but presumably you're looking for some kind of commitment ahead of time and that's where I have a problem at the moment. I'll keep an eye on the site and see how things pan out after Christmas.

The problem with free, wild camping in Norway is the fact that suitable places to put up a tent are very hard to find. Everywhere is either stony/rocky or wet.

This trip is open to everyone, including the very stupid. To quote a girl who is suing the travel agents she used for a gap year in Thailand after she fell off a waterfall she was climbing:

“If they had said to me: ‘Don’t go in the waterfall, it’s dangerous,’ I wouldn’t have climbed up it but nobody said anything at all."

I don't people saying "they never said riding a moped for hundreds of miles could be dangerous"

As for the microbikes, that is very much the idea, it's open to all bikes, but so many of these trips are only really open to the guys with a GS and a fat wallet, we thought we'd try something a bit more accessible.

Good idea! You're not entering a desolated frozen landscape, though - the roads leading to the Arctic is quite extensively trafficked by tourist from all over Europe in the summer, most of them in their camper vans. Not that they help you if you break down, but they are there in case of emergency. Get some route tips and other general info at www.ridenorway.com.

Oh, and you should go on a bit further from the Arctic Circle - you are only a relatively short distance from the magnificent Lofoten Islands when you cross the circle. Choose the Coastal Road 17 on your way northbound.

PS: Tag all the way up to the North Cape, to add a bit of adventure to it all.
PPS: If you are REALLY adventurous: Do the trip in the winter time, like Andy from Yorkshire did on his C90 a couple of years back.

I like the idea of doing it in winter would add a bit more excitement/challenge to it. Either way it sounds like great idea though whats your facebook page called?

I'm in Stavanger Norway. I'm riding up to Lofoten on 22nd of July from Stavanger.

I wouldn't mind doing some of the riding with you guys! If you need anything give me a holler.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
