Music while riding?!
Hey guys,

I did a search & couldnt find anything which surprises me since Im listening to music pretty much all day on most days while travelling.

So what do you guys listen to? I met some guys listening to audiobooks on the road, but they tend to distract me, so i usually just listen to music.

On this trip so far ive been listening mostly to Johnny Cash, Beatles, Tom Waits, Led Zeppelin & Pearl Jam... but im getting a little bored with my playlists, so any recommendations would be much appreciated!

Walton, Vaughan-Williams, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Holst....

My Wife used to make us have her pop on half the time but Bluetooth with three channels means I can avoid that unless I fancy a bit of Paloma Faith, Shakira or Pink.

Can't do audio books, the Rugby, Test Match etc. I either tune out and miss it or find the road going places that might ruin my day. Nearest I can do is Jeff Wayne's War of the World's.

I'm an audiobook fiend, so if it's motorway and I can be fairly confident that I won't need my brain too much to keep me going in the right direction I'll have some SciFi on the go. Peter F Hamilton's 'Commonwealth Saga' kept me happy crossing most of Europe by motorway last year. Got to be fiction though, non fiction requires too much brainpower.

If I'm on the twisties it's usually my grand play list on shuffle. It's got everything under the sun. Dire Straits, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Marley... I could go on. And on.

If off road - I need my ears, so music off.

When I'm the on the bike it means I'm not at work so all phones ear plugs and IT are of no intrest
The sounds of traveling is music to my ears plus sight and smells the temperature changs all this equals freedom for this biker
Enjoy the ride my not so normal freinds

I find music occupies that little part of my little brain that wonders off...

So rather than thinking about what flavour noodles I might eat later, I warble along to all sorts.

I download spotify playlists but it is mainly 1970s, 2000s rock and choral..

I find Bob Marley better in a big city, rather than Rage Against the Machine. I made this mistake in Istanbul, a taxi driver clipped me, I told him his mother f**cks goats. Not a great ambassador for my country, hey?

I switch between nothing, music, and audiobooks. Some fiction (Robert Jordan, David Weber, both have a lot of hours), some non-fiction (History, Short History of Nearly Everything by Bryson is common). Sena lets me turn it on and off pretty easily.

While Driving I like to listen to Audio books or NPR, sometiems music.

When Riding I love the sound of the wind, and the hum of the tires. I also do not want to be distracted or not hear if need be.

Here in France, the powers that be have decided that noise (and telephones) are a major distraction to riding /driving and a significant cause of accidents . The use of in ear speaker buds and bluetooth phone ear pieces are therefore banned ( quite rightly IMHO) and only one helmet speaker is allowed. Don't get caught out here listening to your favourite symphony or random selection, the fines are enough to make your eyes water, and they are roadside instant.

i always feel like i'm doing something a bit dodgy when i ride with my earphones in, but 30 min each way to work 5 times a week made me not care too much.
i reason that, at 50mph or more i can only hear the wind anyway.
when out on the adventures, for long stints, i'll have the music and the gps in my head. it all works out.
good to know i cant do it in france. anywhere else its illegal?

as for music, i have a surprising amount of 70s and 80s for my age, with a big heap of desert rock.

Podcasts for me more than audiobooks. I've found to my great surprise that my cheapo Sena 3S-W (in a Shoei NXR) works really well with regular drugstore foam earplugs - no road noise, but I can listen to podcasts no problem. Because it's not a long piece of fiction, I'm not bothered if I miss a bit while paying all my attention to the road.

Music as well of course. My favourite riding album by far is The Answer from OCRemix.

France may have made in ear or in helmet music illegal but they've surely not found any magical method to make this new law enforceable. If I get pulled one of the first things I will be doing is stopping my music, regardless of what country I am in. That's just a tap of the navi or of my helmet controls. Can be done at the same time as politely taking my helmet off to speak to the nice officer. Probably before he's even got out of his car and stated to walk towards me.

The only way that law might modify my behaviour would be to stop me 'dancing' on the bike as I ride. No point making it obvious.

My musical tastes are pretty diverse, but I tend toward classic rock while on the road. The Doors are probably my top pick for an open road.

While riding South America, Central America and Mexico and now Cuba
it might be culturally appropriate to listen to the music of the "others."

The second selection is also appropriate for Angola.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
