BMW development rider confesses

I'm enjoying my role in the development of the BMW S1000RR Mk 2.

It's just I thought I was a customer and this is recall number 3

With its capability it probably good someone has come across n fixed whatever before you find out ,maybe the hard way,having a Buell sometimes it was things found while racing, incorporated into the new years production n now is being applied to your year/model.at no charge,seems good to me.

I think this is a GOOD SIGN for BMW. In years past BMW would ignore a lot of issues, blame faults on customers ... all kinds of Monkey Business and lots of B.S. to get out of paying for repairs or failed components.

But after several company wide shake-ups it seems BMW are being a lot more forth coming.

Trust me ... ALL companies have recalls. I think for the most part recall notices are initiated internally by the company ... not from outside agencies. It is NOT WISE policy to wait until the NTSB writes you up for violations or law suits are filed and then the PRESS get hold of the story. This happened to BMW plenty of times and they also paid A LOT in court cases.

Now, BMW are ahead of the curve. Doing recalls proactively. It's WIN WIN because it saves them money, saves customers and builds reputation.
I'd view it as a positive.

If me, I'd take FULL ADVANTAGE of the recall visit to bring up and have repaired or replace every single niggle you can find. Absolutely everything.

My old friend Ray would wait right before his 3 year (USA) warranty was about up, then visit BMW dealer and squirt a bit of oil on both shocks.
Result? New shocks front and rear for Ray's GS!

As an ex-BMW test rider I'm afraid I'm in the too little too late camp. I'd be threatening the Sale of Goods Act and asking for my money back. What else is waiting to ruin your day? That's what a walk across a bit of Moroccan scrub courtesy of Rotax and BMW's chocolate fireguard designs does for you. Burnt bridges take serious repair work.

The positive has to be that they've finally decided to stop trading on the reputation built up before 1985. Sort the problems that cause the recalls and keep it up for ten years and they might not automatically get crossed off my list of potential bikes next time.

I envy your patience, must be a good bike when not in the dealers.
