Thanks for the answers everyone. I had not heard of the Halifax Clarity Card so I will check that out. But it seems a no brainer to have at least one of these cards as a back up to the normal credit and debit card in my wallet.
I have travelled before but mostly Morocco and Europe, easy stuff money wise. I want to get it set up right before I go, constant money changing at borders and sorting exchange rates seems a little daunting. I'm sure I will learn a lot on route but I would rather not learn by expensive mistakes.
